Narrative Lectionary Year 4, Week 9, Nov. 7, 2021
1 Kings 19:1-18; John 12:27-28
Opening Prayer
Lord God of hosts:
Today is a day of remembering. Some of us are
sad as we still grieve the loss of a loved one in the last year. Some of us are still angry about death. Some of us are having a hard time with the
emotions we feel because we cannot hug, see, hear, or speak to the one who has
gone on before us. Perhaps this is even
the case for us if that death has happened many years ago. In this hour, we need to be reminded of the
sure and certain hope that there is a future in your kingdom for all who have
followed you and believed in you as Savior.
We need to hear the assurance of this once again. We pray this in Jesus Name. Amen.
Prayer of Preparation
As Jesus has said, Father, we want to see your name glorified. It is for this purpose that we have come to
this hour. Let your name be glorified
through the words that are shared this morning.
Amen
Prayer for All Saints
O Heavenly Father whose name is Glorified:
Throughout the generations, the mantle has been
passed from one to the next, just as Elijah passed his mantle to Elisha when
Elisha was anointed to become the next prophet of God. The loved ones that we remember today have
passed their mantles to the next generation as they have left this life and
transitioned to the life eternal. We
remember them with sadness, with love, with fondness. We remember also loved ones who have gone
before who were not named here today publicly, but whom we name in the silence
of our hearts…silence…May our legacy
be such that we pass on our mantles, our faith, our belief to the next
generation. May they grow in your love
so that they will pass it onto the generation that comes after them. It is through this that the choir of saints
continues to grow so that the praise of your name from heaven becomes so loud
that the earth cannot ignore it! This Lord
is the legacy of the saints that their example shows us what it is to love and
honor you and bring glory to your name alone.
Amen.
Intercessory Prayer
Lord Jesus who has glorified the Name of God and is glorified by Him:
When we are in the midst of the wilderness it can feel as if we are
left completely alone. We need to be
reminded that this is a time when you may be closest to us. Reaching out, providing for our needs,
ensuring our safety, and battling our enemies.
For all who are in a wilderness at this time, we pray that they would
hear your voice of comfort whether it is in fires, earthquakes, mighty winds,
or the quiet. May the glory that is
brought the name of Jesus Christ allow that they are comforted even if the
wilderness is caused by grief, death, loss of employment, diagnosis of illness,
bad prognosis, relationship issues, maltreatment, or any other stressors in
their lives. We pray it in your name
with the prayer you have taught: Our
Father… Amen.
Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance
God of glory:
Our lives are no better than our
fathers.
We too have sinned as has every generation.
Every sin recounted in the Bible has been committed by this generation,
and we are guilty for having acted in
these ways,
and for having not speaking out when
others when they have sinned.
Forgive us we pray and hear the confessions of our hearts.
Silence
Hear the Good News:
Jesus has been glorified.
He has gone to the cross.
He has emerged from the grave.
He has gone ahead into heaven
and has taken His seat at the Right
Hand of God
presiding over the banquet of the Lamb!
In the Name of God, you are forgiven.
Offertory Prayer
Our needs are simple, Lord God.
We have need of food, water, shelter, and your guiding hand. You bless us with abundance. May the gifts we bring today provide for the
needs of those who are in a wilderness of having not enough. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Benediction
May God be with you this week.
May His voice call out to you
in whatever way that will get your attention.
And may the blessing of the
Father, Son, and Spirit cause you to bring glory to their name.
AMEN
